A New Process for the Recovery of Ammonia from Ammoniated High-Salinity Brine

This paper describes a new method for the recovery of high-concentration ammonia from water in form ammonium chloride, hydroxide and carbonate. The was applied to Solvay process, which sodium bicarbonate is produced through reaction ammoniated brine CO2 gas. effluent contains soluble chloride. proposed based on using high-alkalinity reactant, calcium oxide (CaO), closed electrocoagulation cell operating at specific current density. recovered collected as gas within containing deionized (DI) room temperature. Afterwards, solution (DI water–NH3 gas) concentrated separate then reused process other applications. treatment aluminum electrodes density 5–15 mA/cm2. After 7 h cell, high reduction concentration—99%—was realized after ~9 electrochemical treatment. initial concentration 13,700 mg/L N decreased 190 N. Furthermore, an 77.1% achieved. Generally, this starts temperature, can result energy 80%—from 7.8 2.3 kWh/kg NH3—compared conventional processes, entail heating effluents 160 °C. system were found be suitable water, utilized landfill leachate, municipal industrial wastewater.
